Hello everybody! I trust you had a good read of my last post Best Tips for Type 1 Hair. As promised today’s blog is all about type 2 hair!

The characteristics most distinguishable for this type of hair are the deep waves of the strands. Type 2 hair typically has S-shaped curves which start really close to the scalp. This wavy type of hair can further be broken up into three categories; 2A, 2B and 2C. They are also called W2a, W2b and W2c. Typically this type is found among people of European descent.

2A/W2a Hair

2A hair on my friend Katie.
  • This is fine with a loose S-shaped pattern
  • Lacks definition and volume due to thin strands
  • Very manageable and easily styled
  • S-waves are stretched out throughout hair

2B/W2b Hair

  • Shorter, more distinct S- waves
  • Frizzy close to the top of the head
  • Has ‘beachy’ waves that usually fall sticking to shape of your face
  • Tangles easily
  • Gets frizzy and messy with weather or temperature changes
  • Dryness is an issue with this type of hair even though it is not so low on the curl spectrum.

2C/W2c Hair

  • A mixture of waves with rings.
  • Deep S-shapes.
  • Fairly coarse waves which begin at the roots.
  • Has shine more than curly hair but not as much as straight hair.
  • Has bounce.
  • Resilient due to its coarseness but it is still resistant to styling.
  • Appears curly and wavy most times.
  • Frizzy.

Type 2 hair has us on a wave right?wink

Ignore my silly attempt at a joke.

So now we know that the typical word to describe type 2 hair is wavy, like a sunny beach right? Good, but we also now know that there are variations to these waves, hence the above sub-categories.

Treating and styling all type 2 hair does follow a pattern, however each sub-category also requires some special tricks. Here are some general tips;

  1. Use frizz-free sprays which won’t be too heavy and weigh down your hair.
  2. Use moisturizing shampoos, conditioners and leave-in conditioners.
  3. Brush waves with a boar bristle brush for smoothness.
  4. Clip ends regularly.
  5. Use praying-hand motion to set waves in place while applying favorite hair cream or moisturizer.
  6. Apply product to soaking wet hair after washing and dry with a diffuser.
  7. Add a gel or serum that aids with definition.

Now for more specific tips for the ‘swavy’(2A), curvy(2B) and whirly(2C) hairs;

  • Short haircuts about shoulder- length are suggested for 2A hair. Adding serums for definition to regime will make the waves stand out. It is easily styled either curly or straight so just maintaining healthy, moisturized (not overly greased) strands will have your crown looking beautiful.
  • Frizz is a major problem for type 2B hair because it’s coarser so using shampoos and conditioners aimed at fighting frizz is uber important. Never brush wet hair. Detangling for this type is best done when the hair is not desert-dry but not too moist either-apply a serum to add hydration. Don’t forget the boar brush.
  • 2C hair is coarse and even more prone to frizz so use products designed for thick hair. Hydrate regularly! To boost waves, a curling iron can be used with a heat protectant applied to hair first. A split down the middle or pulled to the back are great styles for persons with 2C hair waves.

Thank you so much for reading, see you tomorrow!
